Interview Techniques

The Role of Passion in an Interview.

When people apply for jobs, it is usually a series of steps that lead to them actually getting the interview. Some companies speak to them on the phone first or on skype before meeting them in person. Its interesting to think that something you said or the way you said something interested the interviewer and that could be the reason he or she called back. One thing that caught my attention in the lecture is the word “Passion” that word is one of the most important trait to have when getting interviewed by someone. The word itself personally gives me this great feeling, a feeling of hope and believing in something.

I have only experienced getting interviewed for university, which was taken place on Skype. EICAR  The International Film and Television School Of Paris, was the only interview I had experienced back in 2015. Passion. Passion is all i gave off in that interview, it started off normally, regular questions on why i chose film and why Paris. Then passion took over and thats when me and the interviewer (John) went completely off topic and spoke about film and my plans for a good 2 hours. It was almost like we had known each other for years. Couple days later, I got my acceptance letter to Paris and I believe Passion is what caused that.

When you show interest in what you are applying for whether it is a job or a university, even if its a role in a play. How will anyone want to hire someone who doesn’t show that he or she WANTS to be there? Wants to wake up in the morning and go to work or university.

In this article it literally explains that passion is what attracts interviewers to want you there. Just like it was mentioned in the lecture : ” They get very excited talking about the subject. They talk quickly”

Companies, specially in creative media, they do not want people that work like robots or who have skills, its not about the skills it is about the creator ( the person getting interviewed) needs to be passionate about his or her work and how it is done.

They talk quickly, that says a lot about me when i am getting questioned about something i am passionate about. I stutter at times, i talk so fast and so deeply about the topic that i begin to stutter. It does not bother me, I actually find it interesting when people stutter. I myself i know what I want to say but sometimes it takes me a while to get the point out there. Being passionate about your life goal or your major shows the interviewers that there is potential there and there is faith that, that person is going to do whatever is necessary to achieve what is needed.

That is mostly what companies specially in creative media look for, I think that if a person is not passionate for example in film there is a low possibility they will enjoy it or even want to learn.

Critics, Reviewers & Journalists

Difference between Criticism and Reviews

In the generation we live in  when the word “criticism” is said, there is no doubt straight away peoples minds and way of thinking go completely negative. While writing this reflective blog, I have said the word ” criticism ” to at least six people and i asked them “when i said criticism to you what was the first thought you got?”

The reply i received was “NEGATIVE”

Critiques and reviwes to me can be considered similar yet so different. Personally when I hear the word Criticise or criticism, my mind works exactly like the rest of the generation I am not any different than them. The first thought i get is negativity but then the second thought can be an opinion.

As i mentioned in the first blog, my plan in life is write a book. I know that once this book gets published I am going to get a lot of different reviews and critiques. Since I am relating personally to this subject I am going to mention that, I decided at some point to publish the book for the first two weeks as anonymous. The reason i got this thought is because of the critics. I knew that given the century I am living in the critics will judge me for being arab.

If i publish my book internationally as anonymous, I will get the critics honest opinion about the story, once i say that i am Arab i will get their bias opinion. This is a little insight on how I relate to this topic.

while writing this reflective blog i was reading through this article :

I never really took the time to find out the difference between a reviewer and a critic, when an artist or creator gets criticised by a critic, that critic is actually a professional in that field. the difference between them is that the reviewer is just someone interested in the  subject.

My opinion would have  to be if someone reads a review they understand the concept of the subject. A reviewer gives the general impression of it all.  While the critic has the ability to into depth and detail because when someone is considered a critic they are criticising something they know professionally.

After all my findings and research about this topic i found a website that had a sentence that grabbed my attention.

” “Critic” has only been in use since 1583 and was derived from the Greek word ‘kritikos,” meaning “able to make judgments”, “

This article and my research really reconstructed my mind and the way i think of critics and reviewers. Critics have been around for so many years and it does not always have to be negative judgement. To have the courage to tell someone what you think they may have to change or something that you may be interested in.

To be passionate about something enough to write reviews is what a reviewer does. They do not have to be professionally in the subject but just have the passion to give an opinion.

Income and Your Art

Pricing Psychology.

It came to my understanding that even to put a price on something has its own tricks to play with the human brain.

More or less in that part of the lecture it was said that as students in creative media, if ever we were to sell one of our pieces or projects to a buyer it would be possibly harder than actually creating our project. Some people undervalue and underestimate their work while others do the opposite.

I personally relate to this topic because putting a price on something I have taken the time to craft in detail is difficult. My goal in life is write a book, this book will be the story of my life. Making it a biography, in the past and until now I have always contemplated about the price i would put on the book of my life.

The whole idea of selling our art work to consumers fascinates me.

This article:

Made me understand that it is not always about your art and how much it is worth. Most of the time we need to understand the marketplace and what is going on at that time you want to sell your work. The market changes all the time, using the list of strategies based on psychology studies can help but to a point. This article specifies all the different type of ways one can sell their work.

For example : “Consistency in Art Pricing.” Is a topic I read in this article that attracted me to it. Selling a piece of art according to your feelings is not considered professional. On the other hand I would sell my work for a higher price if i feel strongly about it.

The writer of this article gave an example : ” Why is this painting $10,000?” the artist answers. “I’ll tell you why– because not only do you get the painting, but you also get a pound of love and twelve ounces of inspiration.” See what I mean? Doesn’t work.”

In this paragraph he is explaining to us a situation that has occurred with him that he doesn’t agree with. I agree with the solution he suggested on the other hand, do not sell your work that means a lot to you, putting a price on a piece that an artist put his or hers heart and soul into creating is hard. No amount of psychology studies for pricing can convince an artist.

After reading through this topic and the article I have learnt a lot  about myself.

I know selling a piece of my work would be extremely difficult for me given that I can be a perfectionist at times and my paintings or writing need to be exactly how i pictured it in mind. The writer goes into great detail in how people are supposed to deal with their art work and the different ways in selling them. Also after this article i learnt something about myself, i realised that I would not sell my art.

Planning My Future

In life all we need to do is move forward, looking back only haunts us, with everything in our lives whether its university or our own social life. You may think what does this have to do with the unit I am studying at SAE, but its called Critical thinking in a Creative media. The name of the course speaks for itself, Critical thinking, as a student this class is making me learn more about my identity.

In my opinion to successfully complete the unit, I have to start to understand the meaning of being a self learner. Thats very important given that being a university student that is what we need to be. This unit helps me grow into the person I need to be to be able to achieve my goals. It opens doors in my mind that I never thought I had, thinking creatively about subjects the professor brings up in class. To be able to inspire the students around me by giving my point of view about something and hearing theirs.

Enhancing my writing skills is extremely important and is included in this unit. That by itself prepares me for the courses that are coming in the next trimester. The effect your professor has on you plays a big role in understanding the lecture, thankfully I relate to my professor and I am always interested in what he has to say. That encourages me to work harder, if you find your professor boring you most defiantly will not want to understand what he is saying. Whereas communicating with him in class gives you confidence to be able to present a presentation or anything else.

My Strengths and Weaknesses as a Learner.

As learners, through the years we all start to realise our strengths and weaknesses.

One of my strengths as a learner is that I can be a hard worker, once I set my mind on achieving something I do not give up until I do. It has to be something I am interested in and dedicated to. Once I understand something, I realised I am really good at re explaining it to other people. That always helps me memorise, when i re explain things to other people.

One of my weaknesses as a learner would be that sometimes I lack motivation and that causes me to get distracted really fast. The ability to sit and work on one project for a long amount of time is something that I need to improve, getting distracted by phone calls and social media tends to happen more than I care to admit.

The resources available at SAE can come in handy at any time such as the Library which have books we may need. Students who have already taken certain courses are very helpful when you ask for their help. The most resourceful of them all would without a doubt be our teachers, given how well they know the lesson they probably expect every question possible.

The Type of Learner I am.

Personally I have never really given any thought to what type of learner I am but If I were to really think about it I would have to say I am a Reading and Writing type of learner. A pen and a paper goes a long way for me, the text I am writing sticks in my mind when I physically write it down. As I mentioned before it has to be completely silent when I am reading over my notes, I can’t ask the class to be silent when I am writing but it is always preferable if it was quiet.

Sometimes I enjoy rewriting my notes just for the fun of it, rewriting them keeps them fresh in my mind. When it comes to diagrams and charts I honestly get confused I would much rather write my own definition and memorise that. Understanding my own interpretation of the subject helps me a lot, of course making sure with the professor that my interpretation is correct.

The fact that my goal in life is to write a book that is a true story and direct it into a movie plays a big role in me being a “Reading and Writing Type of Learner.” That can be why I enjoy writing my own notes down and my own understandings of work. When I think of the idea and turn it into my own words I never forget it.

Where all the magic happens

Where a student studies and even the area an employee does their work is very important to the result they get at the end. Personally I prefer absolute silence while I am studying. Physically speaking, I prefer sitting down on a table with everything I need around me to exclude any chances of distracting myself by getting up. Most people nowadays in the generation that we live in, they like typing things on whether its on a laptop or any other sort of technology. I would much rather write things down on paper the old fashioned way.

I was not always like this, I didn’t enjoy writing things down as a child. Back then it was always easier for me to read out of a book, it was quiet an improvement for me to start loving to write my own words. During and after high school is when I first started to love writing. In high school it became a goal for me to write my own book, but the draft I have is not typed its hand written. If i ever get to publish it I would have to type it out I guess, but for the time being I enjoy writing it physically.

This photo is after a day of studying. As proven in the photo, I should be more organised while I’m studying. I begin very organised but end up extremely messy. I also manage to get distracted by phone calls a lot which can also be something that can use improvement.

A Little Insight into My Life.

So my name is Mera Dada as some of you may know. I have been living in the United Arab Emirates for 20 years now, which is literally my whole life, born and raised here.(I think I should have the passport by now just saying..)

I am originally from Lebanon, from a city in the South called “Sidon,”but its pronounced “Saida.” Im the only girl between my siblings, I have two older brothers who are currently working in the United Arab Emirates. I finally settled in a university after a couple years of finding myself. Started studying Film Production in SAE Institute Dubai. I am currently living in Abu Dhabi, going back and forth to university which isn’t as hard as I thought it would be.

In ten years time, I hope to have accomplished my dream of writing a book and making it into a movie. If one person in the world related to my book in any way that would be an accomplishment for me, because the book is based on a true story. I would have to say the book would be considered a tragedy, but thats why people will relate because everyone has experienced a low point in their life. It differs from one person to another though, someone could be sad because they broke a nail; to them thats their lowest point we don’t know what they are feeling so we can’t judge, another person could witness a dozen suicide attempts from a loved one; that can be their lowest point, we can’t judge. I would like to have created a movie that shows you that sometimes you don’t get what you give and you don’t get treated the same way you treat people. Let me not give too much of the story away.
